Changing your bank to us means changing a lot more

Your money has power — so deciding who to bank with is an important decision.

Formed out of the co-operative movement over 150 years ago, we put our customers and their values before profits. You could say that doing the right thing has always been our thing. Because, unlike a lot of businesses, we haven’t just developed an ethical approach. We’ve had one from the very start.

And now, as part of the Coventry Building Society family, we’re part of a mutually owned business that’s deeply passionate about its members, customers and communities.

How we’re different from other banks

Our values and ethics have always been more than just words. In 1992 we took a pioneering step. We became the first UK bank to have a customer-led Ethical Policy. And it’s still unique to this day.

That means when you bank with us, you get a say in how your money is used. Our customers tell us what matters to them, and we take action on it. That’s why we refuse banking services to businesses involved in the extraction or production of fossil fuels, animal cruelty or those that incite hatred.

Instead, we’re dedicated to supporting the co-operative movement, as well as social enterprises and charities, who are making a difference in their local community. And we’re partnering with organisations that make change happen, by standing up for the rights of others and championing equality for all.

Join a bank that shares your values

As the original ethical bank, we understand that your money has the power to make a positive difference to the planet, its people and our communities.

Protecting the planet has always been a cornerstone of our Ethical Policy. It’s why we haven’t funded the extraction or production of fossil fuels since 1998, why we’re supporting our customers to become more sustainable and why we’re working together with Friends of the Earth to green over 1,000 nature-deprived spaces across the country.

People are at the heart of everything we do. It’s why we’ll continue to campaign for change and champion equality for all. We’ll always take action on the issues that matter to our colleagues and customers; whether it’s ending youth homelessness and domestic abuse, securing the future of hospice care or standing up for everyday human rights.

As a bank built on co-operative values, we know the importance of building stronger, more resilient communities. That’s why, since 2023, we’ve given back over £3 million to local communities, including through our Customer Donation Fund; which offers grants to special projects led by our charity and community customers. It’s why we are committed to free everyday banking for charities and community groups. And it’s why, together with Co-operatives UK, we’re committed to helping new and existing co-operatives to thrive, through our unique Business Support for Co-ops programme.
